CPSO ARRESTS STUDENT FOR GUN & DRUGS IN BACKPACK AT SCHOOL

Yesterday afternoon Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office detectives were dispatched to LaGrange High School in regard to a student bringing a gun to school in his backpack.

           

During the initial investigation detectives learned at approximately 12:30 p.m. CPSO safe school officers observed a disturbance during lunch period between a group of students.  When the deputies approached the students they began to disperse at which time one of the students, a 17 year old male, walked by a deputy and he smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from the student.  When the deputy detained the 17 year old he attempted to hand off a backpack to another student, at which time the deputy observed a handgun in an open section of the backpack.

           

The student’s backpack was searched by deputies and a loaded gun along with marijuana was found inside.

           

The student was booked in the Juvenile Detention Center and charged with illegal possession of a firearm on school campus; possession of marijuana; possession of CDS in drug free zone; illegal possession of a firearm by a juvenile; and possession of a firearm in presence of narcotics.

           

CPSO Deputy Dewayne Simmons was the arresting deputy and Detective Brittany Jones is the lead investigator on this case.
