CPSO INVESTIGATES TRAFFIC FATALITY IN MOSS BLUFF

Earlier this morning at approximately 5:00 a.m. the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to an accident on North Perkins Ferry Road in Moss Bluff.  The preliminary investigation reveals the driver of a 2009 Toyota Corolla, Derrick L. Leone, 31, 728 Phillip Street, Sulphur, crossed the center line causing a head on collision with a 2011 Jeep, driven by Valery Jordan, 71, Ragley.  While Jordan was being airlifted to a hospital in Lafayette, she died from injuries she sustained in the crash. 

 

When deputies were speaking with Leone he showed obvious signs of impairment.  Deputies also located 21 Hydrocodone pills, 3 Xanax bars, and a small bag of methamphetamine inside the car.  Leone was transported to a local hospital for toxicology testing; results are still pending. 

 

Leone was arrested and booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center and charged with DWI; vehicular homicide; driving left of center; 2 counts of possession of CDS II; and possession of CDS IV.  His bond has not yet been set.

 

The investigation is ongoing, and it has not yet been determined which direction of travel the vehicles were traveling. CPSO Sgt. Bryan Guth is the lead investigator of this accident.
