CPSO ARRESTS MAN FOR CRUELTY TO THE INFIRMED, FALSE IMPRISONMENT AND MOTOR VEHICLE THEFT

Lake Charles, LA –

On Sunday, September 18 at approximately 5:40 a.m. the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office received a call in reference to a motor vehicle theft at a convenience store on Highway 171 in Moss Bluff.   When deputies arrived on scene they were informed by the complainant that while he was inside the store an unknown male stole his vehicle.  The complainant was able to give deputies a description of the man and stated he witnessed him head south on North Perkins Ferry Road.

CPSO Dispatch put a BOLO (Be On The Lookout) out for the car and several minutes later deputies located it at a convenience store on Sam Houston Jones Parkway.  Deputies witnessed a man, later identified as Shane W. Loftin, 45, matching the description of the suspect, walking away from the car.  Loftin was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital after he stated he had ingested illegal narcotics and thought he was going to die.

Later that morning, at approximately 8:20 a.m., while deputies were still investigating the motor vehicle theft, they received another call in reference to a disturbance involving Loftin.  When deputies arrived on scene they were advised by 2 family members, ages 73 and 74, that Loftin had arrived at their home around 1:30 a.m. and held them against their will inside the residence.  The victims advised deputies that Loftin had hit them, causing lacerations and bruising.  Deputies were also told by the victims that Loftin continued to physically abuse the 73 year old woman in an attempt to gain her car keys.  It was also learned Loftin had damaged the phones in the home to prevent them from calling for help.  The victims told detectives Loftin stole a bank card and two checks from their home and left in their car after he found the keys in their bedroom.  Minutes later deputies located the car abandoned with a busted out passenger window on Highway 171 in Lake Charles.

At approximately 10:50 a.m., on the same morning, deputies received another call in reference to a property damage complaint involving Loftin.  When deputies arrived at the home on Goos Ferry Road in Lake Charles they spoke with the complainant who stated around 3:30 a.m. he heard a car in his front yard and when he went outside he witnessed Loftin, his family member, driving recklessly in his yard.  He stated that Loftin hit a swing set and caused it to hit the side of his home and then attempted to run over him.  The victim also sated Loftin rutted up his yard and crashed through his front gate, causing damage to the gate and fence.  The victim told deputies Loftin was driving the car belonging to the 73 year old family member.

After being released from the hospital Loftin was arrested and booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center and charged with 2 counts of theft of a motor vehicle; 3 counts of theft under $750; simple robbery; 2 counts of cruelty to the infirmed; 2 counts of false imprisonment; simple criminal damage to property under $500; aggravated criminal damage to property; aggravated assault; simple battery; and criminal trespass.
