CPSO RESPONDS TO ACCIDENTAL DEATH AT BLACK BAYOU BRIDGE

Lake Charles –

Earlier this morning at approximately 4:30 a.m. the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to Black Bayou Bridge, located at 8900 Big Lake Road in Lake Charles. The complainant, who worked for DOTD, called and requested us to go check on the bridge operator because they had not been able to reach her by phone.

When deputies arrived they discovered the bridge operator, Dorothy S. Carter, 58, Grand Chenier, inside the control tower face down in the motor. During further investigation it appears an article of Carter’s clothing became stuck in the motor and she was unable to free herself. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Foul play is not suspected, the death appears to be accidental.

The Black Bayou Bridge is still closed, but DOTD hopes to have the bridge open later this afternoon.

CPSO Detective Lance Melendy in the lead investigator on this case.
