CPSO INVESTIGATES TRAFFIC FATALITY IN MOSS BLUFF

Lake Charles –

Last night around 10:40 p.m. the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to an accident near the intersection of North Perkins Ferry Road and Mohican Drive in Moss Bluff. The preliminary investigation reveals the driver of a 2014 GMC pickup truck, Vance Charles, 63, Lake Charles, was traveling north on North Perkins Ferry Road. Charles pulled in a parking lot and backed on to North Perkins Ferry Road, starting to travel south, when Michael Dugas, 48, 437 Erika Lane, Lake Charles, the driver of a 2006 GMC pickup truck, struck Charles’ truck from behind.

Charles was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The front seat passenger in Charles’ truck was airlifted to a local hospital and is listed in stable condition. Dugas and the front seat passenger of his truck refused medical treatment. When deputies were speaking with Dugas he showed obvious signs of impairment. Dugas was transported to a local hospital for toxicology testing; results are still pending.

Dugas was arrested and booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center and charged with DWI 1st. It was also learned that Dugas had a warrant for contempt of court. His bond is still pending.

CPSO Sgt. Bryan Guth is the lead investigator of this accident.
